A night at the museum

Saturday night we went into L.A. to enjoy some warm weather and culture.  Up and  over the Mulholland grade we quickly pulled off the freeway and into a traffic jam.  It seemed like a large-scale mob was gathering at the Getty Center for their Saturday Nights at the Getty concert series.  That night, a hipster band called Best Coast was playing to roughly 2,000 attendees.  The Getty, J. Paul’s billion dollar effort to help culture in Los Angeles take another (giant) step forward, is a Disneyesque sort of place, hewn from the hill just west of the 405 freeway at Sunset Boulevard.  Monorail and all.

It’s  good programming in an attempt to bring young adults into the Getty complex, where they might also be infected by 500-year-old masterpieces by the likes of Dutch painter Peter Paul Reubens or stand in witness of the photographic series of images of Cuba, 1950’s to present.

The Getty is a multi acre showpiece for the city of angels which melds environment, architecture, landscape and vistas, along with a world-class (if not robust), art collection.

And the images of Cuba, past and present, are really cool…

Trained as a physician, he turned into a rebel...
