We killed the electric car

ev1   After seeing the film Who Killed the Electric Car, many suspects are presented, many are found guilty but in my mind, the most responsible party for its demise is me and you (the consumer).

Yes General Motors was evil to recall perfectly good vehicles, yes big oil attempted to squash efficient battery technology, it’s true that after Jimmy Carter declared that ‘America will never import more foreign oil than we do today’  (1978), no president thereafter pursued that goal.  But when it comes down to it, it’s we the people that are to blame.

Now nearly 300 million strong, there is nothing that we as a group of people cannot achieve if we put our minds to it.  And the time has come for us to wrap our minds around zero emission, non fossil burning technology.  It exists today, it’s just not available to us today.  Unless we really want it.

  1. Just watched this last night. It amazed me – was never totally aware of the conspiracy that was conspired by GM. And now? They are asking for money. Rick Wagoner, ceo of GM at the time said that his worst decision was “Axing the EV1 electric-car program and not putting the right
resources into hybrids. It didn’t affect profitability, but it did affect image.” Funny how the mighty have fallen.

  2. Hm, a cogent antithesis to the idiotic mantra ‘drill baby, drill.’ Glad to know I’m not alone in agitating not for 30mpg cars, nor 40, 50 or 60, but rather the unceremonious death of the internal combustion engine altogether, and good riddance — lest we squeeze the continent of every last drop before its inevitable exhaustion, leaving our coastlines and national parks irrevocably plundered and befouled for all time… (since, clearly, big oil has little interested in cleaning up their messes, as a trip out the 33 readily evinces…)
